Mumps is not a boys' thing. Mumps is a viral infection that can affect anyone, regardless of gender. It is caused by the mumps virus and is characterized by swelling of the salivary glands, leading to symptoms such as fever, headache, and muscle aches. Mumps can affect both boys and girls, as well as adults and children. It is important for everyone to be vaccinated against mumps to prevent its spread. **

Mumps is also called "Ziegenpeter" in German because the term translates to "goat Peter" in English. This nickname originated from the belief that the disease was commonly spread by goats. In the past, it was thought that children who spent time around goats were more likely to contract mumps, leading to the association with the animal in the nickname. **

The vaccination for measles, mumps, and rubella is known as the MMR vaccine. It is a combination vaccine that protects against all three diseases. The MMR vaccine is typically given in two doses, with the first dose administered around the age of 12-15 months and the second dose around 4-6 years of age. It is highly effective in preventing these contagious diseases. **

People with mumps often have chipmunk cheeks due to the swelling of the salivary glands, particularly the parotid glands, which are located on the sides of the face. The swelling causes the cheeks to become puffy and gives the appearance of chipmunk cheeks. This swelling is a common symptom of mumps and is caused by the inflammation of the salivary glands due to the mumps virus. **

We typically only get measles, rubella, and mumps once in a lifetime because our immune system develops long-lasting immunity to these viruses after we have been infected or vaccinated. When our body encounters these viruses for the first time, it mounts a strong immune response and produces memory cells that remember the virus and can quickly respond if we are exposed to it again in the future. This long-lasting immunity is why most people do not get these infections more than once. **
